  • Microsoft Releases Windows Server 2008 Foundation (2009-04-01 20:26:12)
It had been announced a while ago already, but today Microsoft finally took the wraps off its latest server offering: Windows Server 2008 Foundation. Foundation is a cut-down version of the Server 2008 family, but Microsoft uncharacteristically did not remove all that much. It won't be sold as a stand-alone product; rather, OEMs get to sell it pre-installed.

  • *OSNews Goes Open Source* (2009-04-01 16:29:38)
We here at OSNews take open source software seriously. That's why, today, we're making our site's source code available to the public. While some sites have inline SQL statements, embedded passwords, afterthought modules, and sensitive data embedded into their pages, at OSNews, we have a strict system that employs no hacks whatsoever to extend functionality. This is why our site rarely changes look-and-feel and rolls out new features slowly, only after they've been rigorously tested. This code i ...

  • Conficker Worm a Big Letdown (2009-04-01 15:48:46)
We're well and deep into April 1 now, and if you were to believe some of the reports and hype on the internet, we should've all been paying in bottle caps right about now. As any sane person already saw coming, the Windows worm Conficker didn't do anything. It just kind of sat there, patiently mocking all those who did not update their machines properly.

  • Rackable Systems Buys Bankrupt SGI (2009-04-01 15:15:21)
Silicon Graphics Inc., the perma-struggling workstation-turned-server-maker, filed for bankruptcy protection today, and was immediately bought by Rackable Systems. Rackable has signed to take on all of SGI's liabilities. The deal is expected to complete in 60 days. The combined company will target the hyper-competitive market for x86 boxes for cluster and high performance computing, internet and cloud services."This combination gives us the potential for significant operational synergies, a stro ...

  • Firefox 3.0 Surpasses IE7 in Europe Browser Stats (2009-04-01 12:39:56)
And so Firefox continues its march into Europe. It is no secret that alternative browsers are much more popular in Europe than they are in North America, and recent statistics by StatCounter confirm that Firefox 3.0 has actually surpassed Internet Explorer 7, making it the most popular browser in Europe.

  • Collecting Underpants in the Cloud (2009-04-01 12:02:09)
The technology world is all aflame about"cloud computing", and how businesses are supposed to move all of their stuff into the cloud, or die. Or something. In my eyes,"cloud"is simply a different name for the internet, and cloud computing is simply a different and fancier name for what most internet users have been doing for ages.

  • Rumours: Snow Leopard To See August Release (2009-04-01 00:07:15)
More and more rumours and bits of news are making their to the web about Apple's upcoming Snow Leopard operating system. With the date set for Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in early June (as usual), rumours have shifted focus away from features, but towards Snow Leopard's release date. AppleInsider now claims to have the answer.

  • Fedora 11 Beta Released (2009-03-31 17:47:44)

  • Chrome for Mac Sees Progress (2009-03-31 15:18:46)
We're six months after the initial release of Chrome for Windows, and we still don't have the promised Linux and Mac OS X versions. Jordan already detailed the progress on the Linux/Gtk+ version of Chrome not too long ago, and now Ars has done the same for the Mac version. As it turns out, Chrome for Mac is making some serious progress.

  • *Conficker Worm: Hoax or Criminally Genius Scheme?* (2009-03-31 08:30:16)
Many have gotten antsy the past months about the Conficker worm, and all with good reason. Though the worm hasn't done much of anything (yet) except spread like the plague, it's infectious if one doesn't have his or her Windows operating system up-to-date with the most recent security updates. The worm is supposed to execute on April 1st, and the computer world is holding its breath to see if a disaster comparable to the hyped-up supposed Y2K doomsday will ensue or if it's just someone's idea of ...

  • Western Digital Acquires SiliconSystems, SSDs to Follow (2009-03-31 04:26:22)
Western Digital, a leading maker of the traditional hard drive, supposedly felt a little out of the loop as they still hadn't really caught on to the solid-state disk bandwagon. Instead of playing a long game of catch-up, they simply forked out $65 million in cold cash and bought the technology they needed in the form of the aptly-named SiliconSystems, Inc. SiliconSystems has been making millions of SSDs for embedded systems for the past several years and will find a nice new home after integrat ...

  • Mono 2.4, MonoDevelop 2.0 Released (2009-03-30 23:52:00)
The Mono guys have released Mono 2.4 and MonoDevelop 2.0."We just released two big projects we have been working on for quite a while. Mono 2.4 is a much faster, scalable and tuned version of Mono, like you have never seen before. Major highlights from the previous release are documented in our release notes."

  • Performance-Testing Intel's Nehalem (2009-03-30 23:17:22)
InfoWorld's Paul Venezia put Intel's new Nehalem to the test and found the technology a"game-changing development". Using an HP ProLiant DL580 with four quad-core Intel Xeon X7350 CPUs running at 2.93GHz per core as a baseline, Venezia's Nehalem system - which ran two quad-core Intel Xeon W5580 CPUs at 3.2GHz per core with HyperThreading enabled - performed roughly 60 percent faster across a battery of tests, including gzip compression, WAV-to-MP3 encoding, MPEG-4 to Flash Video conversion, and ...
